Abstract:Information on the characteristics and behavior of the prison population is reviewed in order to indicate the high risks they face in contracting HIV/AIDS. Among the factors implicated in HIV/AIDS and which render prisoners a high-risk population are: demographic factors such as gender (male), age (young), low SES, and low levels of education; compromised immune systems; previously contracted STIs; sexual frustration and deprivation; and exposure to infection by inmates due to overcrowding, sodomy, violence, sharing of iV needles, and un-hygenic tattooing practices.
